More about this scene

Polegate barely existed until the railway arrived in 1846; initially it was the station for Eastbourne, connected to it by a horse omnibus. A branch line soon followed, and Eastbourne station opened in 1849, but Polegate grew, and until it was by-passed recently it was something of a bottleneck on the Bexhill Road, the A27. The station, to the left out of shot, is a modern rebuild, but the Victorian signal cabin on the right survives, and still controls the busy level crossing.
