More about this scene
Our last view in this chapter before turning north back to Hailsham shows the Horse and Groom pub at the junction of the High Street and the Eastbourne Road, the A22. Something of a road-house in 1920s Sussex vernacular style in timber- framing, brick and stone, it is a landmark along a dull suburban main road. In the aprons of the first floor bay windows are rather good plaster reliefs of a horse being led by a groom. Apart from a larger car park and shortened chimney stacks, little has changed in this view since the 1950s.
