More about this scene
The church was badly damaged during the last siege of the castle after being used as a lookout for the opposing side. In the foreground is the Buttercross, built on the site of the former St Oswald's Cross. The Buttercross was erected in 1734 by the wife of Solomon Dupier, a former garrison commander in Gibraltar, who later lived in the town.
