More about this scene
Development along the market place grew in medieval times when wealthy merchants invested in some very grand houses. Here we see the façade of the Market Hall (left), and in the distance the Town Hall (1785) and Assembly Rooms (1882). The newsagents W H Smith (right) later moved to the old premises of the house furnishers, England.
