More about this scene
Strata Florida was originally established in this remote spot by the Normans in 1163, but when Lord Rhys took control of most of Ceredigion, he re-established the abbey on a new site, where Cistercian monks spent about 50 years building one of the first stone buildings in the county. The abbey was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 and was sold to the Earl of Essex and his agent, John Stedman, whose family later used much of the stone in their mansion and farm buildings.
