More about this scene
The year 1907 is carved in the stone, but this picture was taken the following year when the school opened for 200 secondary age boys and girls. In 1927 the school became the Grammar School, and a decade later it became a boys only school, with girls diverted to Parkstone Grammar School. Poole Grammar School vacated the building, which had quadrangle at the rear, for new buildings on Gravel Hill which were opened by Princess Margaret in 1966. The old building briefly became Seldown School before being demolished to make way for the Seldown Bridge, carrying traffic past the Dolphin Swimming Pool. The school was adjacent to Ladies' Walking Field on the site of the rope works, where women walking the ropes had been a common sight.
