More about this scene
The decline of the herring fishery was offset to a certain extent by dredging for scallops and queenies. In 1937 the first dredging operations on a commercial scale were undertaken around Port Erin. It is estimated that 65 per cent of the scallop population in the Irish Sea is to be found within Manx waters. By the 1980s, half of all scallops caught in the Irish Sea were being landed in Man.
