Portchester Castle was built by the Romans to defend the English Channel from raiding Saxons and is one of the largest of the 'Saxon shore' forts. Located on a spit overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, the castle was regularly used by kings when visiting Portsmouth. Henry VIII came here with Anne Boleyn.
