More about this scene

Work on the construction of the viaduct began in 1894 and was completed in 1897, but owing to the collapse of one of its piers it was closed straight away. It was not until 1898 that it was repaired, but then a further collapse delayed its opening until 1900, which was just before this photograph and photgraph number 45552 were taken.
