Porthleven's large harbour was built in 1811 to load copper and tin; it is an important haven on the exposed east shore of Mount's Bay. A good example of the ferocity of winter storms was in 1990, when waves were breaking over the 70-foot tower of the Bickford Smith Institute in the background.

I remember travelling from Luton in Bedfordshire during the late 1950s and early 1960s to spend a week at Mrs Sampson's Harbour House boarding facilities. My father used to drive the coach overnight from Luton and we would stop in Honiton on the way. If we were early we would also stop in Truro for a short time.
