More about this scene
This view shows the commercial centre of Pothmadog, with pleasing old Victorian shopfronts to the right. The town was named after its founder, William Madocks (1773-1838), who constructed the harbour in 1821; it is said that he was descended from Prince Madoc, who is thought to have reached America in 1170, 300 years before Columbus. Madocks also developed the small town of Tremadoc on the western side of the Traeth Mawr.
