Long Family Bakery
A Memory of Portishead.
The Long family owned a bakery and confectionery shop in Portishead. Evidently the business was in the family for at least 3 generations-William Long, his son Alford Long, and his daughter Amy Beatrice Long as late as 1911. Alford's descendants who emigrated to the United States would like to find out more about the family.

Somewhere I have a photograph of all 13 (I think) of Alfords children taken with them standing against the wall of the bakery. I am led to believe it was taken pre 1900.
The bakery is still standing but is now a travel shop.
My grandfather, Stanley Long, one of Alfords sons, took over the bakery and it was handed over to my parents Nancy Bryant (nee Long) and Patrick Bryant at some point with my father being the baker for many years.
The business was sold to a larger bakery company 'Christopher Bell' in approx 1961 but my family continued to live in Portishead.
I do know that many of Alfords sons emigrated to the USA in the early 1900's and about 15 years ago I made attempts at getting in touch but I did not pursue this, which I now regret.
One of his sons 'Arthur' returned back home from the USA and I re her him living with us when I was a small child - I think he had fallen on hard times.
After selling the bakery, I lived in Beach Road East, then Beach Road West, then the Post Office at Redcliffe Bay, then Woodhill Road, back to Beach Road East and currently live in Redcliffe Bay.
Unfortunately, all of my elder relatives on Alfords side of the family are no longer with us.
