More about this scene
Portland stone is renowned throughout the world as a prime building material. Sir Christopher Wren used this durable material for St. Paul's Cathedral. Apart from private family- run quarries, much of the stone was broken by convicts from the nearby prison. Here we can see convicts being marched in strict order for a day's work with pickaxe and crowbar.
