More about this scene

Typical sailing cruisers glide majestically along the River Thurne, passing one of the essential wind pumps which drain the fields throughout the Broads area. This type of elegant windmill came into its own during the spring and autumn when the marshes were often full of flood water; during this time it was literally 'all hands to the pump' to ensure the safety of the cattle who had been turned out onto the land.

Boating On The Broads
Two years after our first visit we came again, bringing our own river cruisers towed by our own cars. We had located a slipway to launch at Martham boatyard prior to starting the holiday. The location at Martham was difficult to find, for strangers, but eventually we arrived after a long and difficult journey and launched the two boats ready for the holiday. The First Holiday At Potter Heigham
We hired a riverside chalet called 'La Dak' on the Martham side of the river, there were two families sharing. I remember there was no car access to the chalet so we had to park the cars next to the bridge and carry all our personal items. We soon found out there was no running water so all requirements had to be collected from a tap near the bridge. There was electricity, but rubbish ...see more

School Holidays
I feel I could write a book as the memories were brilliant! We used to spend the whole summer there and I cried when I had to leave. I remember the boatyard which was run by Mr May, his son was called Billy and he was my brother's best friend. My mom used to give me 6d to go into Lathams and buy maggots to go fishing, and I would sit all day by Mr May's shop and watch the boats struggling to go under the ...see more

The Water Otter
Just by the road bridge on the Yarmouth side was a pub with a long grass garden which went down to the river, on the bank was a post with a notice on it which read "Don't disturb the water otter" and tied to the post was a rusty chain. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
