More about this scene

The village hugs the huge limestone hillside, once the site of much lead mining and smelt mills. The addition of 'under-Scar' came in the 16th century to distinguish the village from other Prestons. In the village are the parish church (1862) and the Wesleyan chapel (1805). The path across the field would be a short cut from the railway line that ran just out of picture.
