Preston, Post Office 1913

More about this scene
The first post office was in the Shambles in Lancaster Road – it was simply a small room connected with a dwelling house, and quickly proved inadequate. It moved to a house in Church Street next to the Grapes Inn. John Johnson was one of the early postmen, and was greatly commended for his speedy deliveries and honesty. Larger premises followed, and finally this large building was erected opposite the Boer War memorial, seen here behind the railings before its removal to a local park in 1922 to allow the First World War memorial to be erected on this site. Just opposite the post office was the site of the flag market, where annually were held the apple market and the pot fair.
