More about this scene
The land for the park was given by Lt Col Cross, who lived in a large and impressive house at the Red Scar. The council bought the strip of land alongside the railway, and the area was ready to be developed. Before the Second World War, if the weather was very cold, the Fire Department would flood to a couple of inches the area between the Rockery and the Bandstand that you can see in this photograph, and people would come and ice-skate there.
