More about this scene
This unusual view of Preston Parish Church was taken from the back of the church. There has been a church on this site since the 7th century; the first church was dedicated to St Wilfrid. Later on, when the Guilds were established, the dedication was changed to St John the Divine, who was patron saint of the Guild Merchants. The church was rebuilt in 1770 and 1854. In 1855 it was altered and restored at a cost of £9,500, and a further £2,000 was spent in 1885 to improve the church and put in gas fittings. When you enter the church today, you cannot help being impressed with the strong military connections displayed - there are many army memorials to be seen.
