More about this scene
The building on the left of our photograph was not just the Art Gallery, but also the Harris Public Library and Museum; it was opened in 1893 as a library, but was not in full use until 1896. The Town Hall, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, was started in 1862. It burnt down in 1947, and after much debate, the ruins were cleared away in the early 1960s.
