The Cheney Family Of Puncknowle

A Memory of Puncknowle.

My great grandfather John Cheney, died in 1943. The Cheney family lived in Puncknowle for centuries and were blacksmiths. They originally came from Litton Cheney, a village nearby, in the sixteenth century, Sir Ralph and Dame Edith Cheney, being the earliest names I have found. My grandmother, Mary Elizabeth, was born the eldest daughter in 1877 to John and Ann nee Hansford, and she married Lionel White from Charmouth in St Mary's Church Puncknowle on 4 June 1896. John and Ann lived next door to the old Post Office

I visited Puncknowle [06.09.2015] as part of tracing my mother's [Symes] family who lived in Swyre and Puncknowle from the late 1700s.
How little Puncknowle has changed , from the 1906 photo, however sadly few traces of the old families remain.

I spent many holidays in Puncknowle from age three to twenty I stayed with my grandparents in Wren cottage which was the end one on the right side of your photo. My parents stayed with Mrs Samways up towards The Crown. When wren cottage fell down or was condemned my grandparents moved across the road to Bride Valley Cottage. I vaguely remember the family Cheney particularly a son called Wayne I hope these comments have been of interest it's been a nostalgic walk down memory lane for me.
