Roke Primary School
A Memory of Purley.
I was a pupil at Roke Infants and Juniors from 1952 to 1958 as were my two brothers and sister slightly different dates. I have a photo of Mr Harris’s class in 1957/1958 and of the school cricket team in the same year. In both I am shown. For me they were happy days. I remember we enjoyed roller skating around the playground amongst other things and playing cricket on the school field which was next to the Kenley CC ground along the Godstone Road. I share the memory of buying stale cakes for one halfpenny each after school from the bakers also in Godstone Road. Our route home was to walk up St James Road a very steep hill reputedly 1 in 6 to our house in Mitchley Avenue. I am no longer in touch with other people from Mr Harris class (except for one person). I went to Wallington CGS after Roke. I know some of my classmates have passed away but for others I have no idea what has become of them. Our class was 50% girls. What became of them I have no knowledge at all but would welcome contact from anyone in Mr Harris’s 1957/8 class.
