Growing Up In Queensbury

A Memory of Queensbury.

I was born in Wellington Street on the 16th. of June 1955. My mother was Kate Holland, formerly Henderson. and my father was George E Holland. Sadly he passed away in 1939. So I dont remember very much about him. I had a great time in my younger years, swimming at the Vic baths, walking down Station Road to the station and buying a penny bar of chocolate from the machine on the wall. My schooling was at Foxhill ( The struggle up to the school in Winter) From there I went to the school near the parish church. Was it Russell Hall ? From there I went to Halifax Tech. for three years. An apprenticeship followed at English Electris, Thornbury. During this time I became acquainted with Eileen Poole who , with her parents Alice and Stanley Poole, lived at the Queens Head. This was about the time we became engaged and subsequently me joining the RAF. We were married at the Queensbury Parish Church on Boxing Day the 26th. December 1956 ( and it was SNOWING) I carried out my RAF career going to Christmas Island for a year. Our first daughter, Elizabeth, was born at the Queens Head in 1959, and our second daughter, Andrea, in 1966. We spent three happy years in Cyprus I completed my RAF service at RAF Scampton after 22 years. Eileen and I will be celebrating our 66th. year of marriage this Christmas. We are now living in Lincolnshire and are very happy.
