The Toy Shop And Miss Swann’s School

A Memory of Rainham.

I lived in the Toy shop in the early 1950’s and went to Miss Swann’s school which I think was somewhere near the clock tower? I remember twin girls, maybe Patricia and Pauline, their father owned a timber merchants. My maiden name was Willats. Does anyone have any pictures of the shop or school or have any information that links with my memories?

I, too, attended MIss Swann's school from 1950 until 1953. In 1953 I transferred to Rainham Primary School in Upminster Road. I left the school at Christmas 1955 when my family moved to Romford.
I remember the Toy Shop in Upminster Road - and still have a Dinky Supertoy purchased from there in 1954 ! Next door (or very close) was Cutbush's flower shop.
The local timber merchants were Newmans who had a yard on the Beam River. My grand-father (Frances William Perthen) had a Watchmakers and Jewellers shop a few doors away from the toy-shop. He maintained the War Memorial Clock .

I have a Google Earth screen capture showing Miss Swann's school building - but unfortunately cannot add it to this comment.
