More about this scene

Opened in June 1904, this elegant structure, sited at one end of the harbour, was designed to cater for pleasure- seekers in all kinds of weather. The upper deck offered the opportunity for a 300-yard stroll around the outside of the main auditorium, while listening to a brass band. Inside, the capacious great hall, 130 feet long by 65 feet, offered a range of other entertainments and was used for plays and concerts. After 1911, a skating rink was added to the facilities. Beneath the building holidaymakers could seek shelter from inclement weather. Beyond the pavilion, the arms of the east and west piers encircling the harbour can be seen, with the latter's lighthouse just visible on the right.

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Ramsgate

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I was born in Ramsgate in 1947. An only child, I lived with my parents in Grove Road. I have many happy memories of the town. Because he worked for the Council, my father got to know every nook and cranny of Ramsgate. I used to love the atmosphere created by the old gas lamps. We had one ...see more
I was born in Ramsgate in 1953 where we lived for 6 years. We lived in a top floor flat next to the Granville Hotel right opposite the beach. Flat 5, Victoria Mansions, Victoria Parade! Lovely place for early childhood. I remember we could sometimes see Calais from the flat and have many memories and photos of walking around the harbour - also being taken to the swimming pool at the end of the slope.
In 1963 I was a vocalist with a Pop Group called Johnny & The Bobcats. I seem to recall we were booked to raise money for the Ramsgate F.C. We played in the West Cliffe three times, once on our own, once with Duffy Power on the bill and once with Deke Arlon & The Offbeats. What a great atmosphere there was with very large crowds. ...see more
I was born in Ramsgate in 1950 in Addington Street where my father and mother had a drapers shop. My mother used to take me out all over the place but my favourite of all was the Waterfall, as a child I remember the coloured lights that shone in the water and I thought they were the most beautiful thing in the world. I also remember the Ramsgate lights on the top of the West Cliff by the San Clu Hotel was it? with ...see more
