Jones Newsagents
A Memory of Rawmarsh.
I have many memories of childhood in Rawmarsh. The fair every year on Tyler's field. My parents owned the newsagent on Kilnhurst Road ,and my Dad would let the fair people use the water tap behind the shop and in return we would get free passes for the rides.
Beyond the field was the tip which was always good for mooching around ,and in those days birds egg collecting was still a common thing to do for young boys and I spent hours down the fields .
We lived on South street, and I can remember my first day at school clearly which was a short walk up the road . A boy called Michael Moran had to be dragged in kicking and screaming.
Big open fire in the winter. Someone getting their head trapped in the railings.
I can still mentally walk every paper round that we delivered to, I would fill in if one of the lads didn't show so got to do a lot of delivering over the years! The first time my dad allowed me to get up,with him at 5.30 am to 'help', I was so excited I slept in my clothes . I was about seven I think.
