Rosehill Park

A Memory of Rawmarsh.

Used to love playing in the park on the swings, in the Sandpitand just generally walking about.
Remember the Peacocks and other birds.
Remember the Holiday at Home Weeks? All started with the procession from Parkgate through Rawmarsh up to the park. Lots to do in the park, entertainment on the Bandstand.
There was also a similar procession on Bonfire Night. Everyone carried lit torches which were then thrown on the bonfire, in the park, to light it. This was then followed by fireworks. Oh it was great to be a child.... no worries.

Born 1950 in Heston Bank. Went to Main Street school. Had a crush on Drena Heart. I think her father used to own a local garage. Used to play with Ann Royston and her brother in Main Syreet. There used to be an old bunker/ air raid shelter, I think in Bisby Street that the kids used to play in. Pitch black inside. Grandparents used to live in Main Street near Hoskins shop. Fields out back to the houses. Sam's newsagent up the road for Beezer, Topper, The Eagle. Used to go through snicker by the Titanic and spend hours in Rosehill Park. Lots to do - 6 seat rocking horse, roundabout, sandpit, paddling pool, putting green (who was the man who used to give out the golf clubs, something like Pogett). Down to Warren Vale to collect sticklebacks, on to the Roman Banks, mess about in Mary Tyler's fields. Go down past arr's cobblers to ride toboggans down hill. So much to do / never bored - proud friendly people. Grandfather used to pay the miners wages from Stubbin Pit sitting at a table in the Horse and Jockey. Never any trouble. Try doing that nowadays! The best childhood that anyone could wish for; amongst the best people I have ever known.
