Born In Avondale Rd Rayleigh Essex

A Memory of Rayleigh.

I was born at home in Avondale Rd, Rayleigh Essex in 1958. We moved to Canvey Island & then in 1963 we relocated to Australia. I only have a few memories of Rayleigh & the most predominant was Snows Farm where I began horse riding at the age of 18 months. There were 2 horses that I rode called "Joey" & "Pee Wee". My Mum rode a brown & white horse called "Hawthorn. It would be so great to hear from anyone who remembers the riding school & knows any of its history.

Well believe it or not I used to ride Hawthorn, he was a Piebald (if spelt correct), Old Farmer Snow had two children a boy and a girl, we used to go there and get the cattle in for milking and just help around the place, that was when I was Ten to 13, we then moved to London Road till I left for Australia in Jan 76

Hi David, that's amazing that you knew Hawthorn. It was the first horse I ever sat on (Mum was riding past our house in Avondale Rd & I was in the front garden with a neighbour & created havoc until they sat me on Hawthorn). Mum had to give up riding so she could pay for me to go instead but I rode 2 black ponies. I am still living in South Australia since we left England in 1963, but I went back for a visit in 2000 & visited Avondale Rd & the house I was born in. Are you still in Australia too?

I also used to ride atFarmer Snows.
My friend rode Hawthorn and I used to ride a grey called Silver. I remember a girl called Brenda who used to work there. I believe Farmer Snow emigrated to Australia.

Hi David. I also share memories of Snows Farm. I loved Hawthorn. We used to muck out and groom fir a half hour free ride in a Saturday . Mum would pay for the other half hour so we got an hour. We also used to take the horses to the surrounding paddocks ( Which is now part of Dorothy Farm estate housing) We would ride them bareback and let them free. My brother Barry also used to ride there and he remembers you. We had to cross a brook into the paddock this is now concreted under the road. Nearby was chestnut Alley where we collected the nuts. It’s still there but recently permission has been given to build nearby so I don’t know how long it will remain. Lìnda Webber
