More about this scene
The Coatham Enclosure was created from an area of sand dunes, and a retaining wall - the New Promenade - was built to protect the area from the blowing sand. This boating lake opened in 1930. The indoor public baths in the centre background were opened in 1900, but they were eventually demolished in 1978, to be re-instated within a new building on the same site.
