More about this scene

Redmire lies 3 miles west of Leyburn. Lead mining was a major employer here, but now the stone quarrying is further north, leaving Redmire in peaceful seclusion. The Wensleydale Railway reached here in 1877 and lasted until 1954 - although a service was reintroduced in the tough winter of 1963. Happily the line, from Leeming to Leyburn, reopened in July 2003, with plans to extend to Hawes and Garsdale Head in future years. Today the already existing line to Redmire carries the occasional army tank from Catterick for manoeuvres on the moors. The stone pillar we see here was erected in 1887, and the village was supplied with lamps to commemorate the 50th year of Queen Victoria's reign. An electric lamp was fitted to the top of the pillar in 1977 to mark the 25-year reign of Elizabeth II.
