More about this scene
The red-brick town hall (centre left) was erected in 1728 in the market place on the site of an ancient chapel of St Thomas à Becket. Along with its turret, containing a clock with four illuminated dials, the town hall also boasted two corner chimneys which were added in 1853 by Lord Somers, but these have since been removed. Behind the town hall is the White Hart Hotel, which was demolished in 1935 and replaced by shops and offices.
