More about this scene

This photograph shows the ivy-smothered shell keep and gatehouse of Restormel Castle at a time when the ruin was still a titular possession of the Prince of Wales. The projecting gatehouse was added about 1100, and the work of replacing the timber palisading with stone occurred sometime during the second half of the 13th century. Edmund, Earl of Cornwall completed the modernisation of Restormel by replacing the internal wooden buildings with stone.
