In its earliest days the Carno ford was used for the conveyance, by mule and pack horse, of iron ore to the Dowlais Iron Works from the Ras Bryn iron mines. At 1093 feet above sea level, this area was one of the earliest industrial communities in Rhymney, although it is hard to imagine that now.

My mother and her brother were born at Gypsy Castle. The family had lived there for many years and we have photos of haymaking in the 1930s etc. There were several houses standing at the time, in a group (5?). Only 2 remain, I believe. I used to live in Carno Street, and actually watched the bridge being taken down. Made the corner to the Barracks level safer I suppose!!! Another bit of history pulled down. Ann
