More about this scene
Now we are a few yards further along the thoroughfare. The signboard for the Swan Hotel (demolished in 1966) now boasts a pictorial representation of the bird (even though the distinctive lantern has been removed) and a new Post Office building has been opened next door. The shops on the near left, housing Browns, Percy's the confectioners and Rennie's opticians, are in a new building, but three doors along the bay- fronted upper storeys visible in the earlier photograph are still there. Although the horse-drawn trap shows that motor traffic has yet to dominate, there are intimations of what lies ahead in the vehicles parked further on.
