More about this scene
Rochester is one of the smallest English cathedrals, measuring 23,300 square feet in area. It was built mainly in the 12th to the 14th centuries, but exhibits work of every period down to the present day. Like Canterbury, it is unusual in having double transepts, along with a raised choir and presbytery with a large crypt beneath. The central tower and spire rise to a height of 156 feet, and were originally completed in 1343 by Bishop Hamo de Hythe. They were rebuilt in the 19th century and again in 1904. At the time this photograph was taken, the building was again undergoing restoration.
