From outside the Squirrel's Head public house, Hare Hall Lane (now Upper Brentwood Road) stretches off towards Hare Street. To the right the diminutive All Saints Church stands in Squirrel's Heath Lane; it was destroyed by enemy action in 1941. To the left will eventually be Station Road leading to Gidea Park Station which was built in 1910.

I lived in Junction Road, Romford from 1946 until 1954. We lived in the last house but one next to the Railway and Railway Bridge. There was a long drive leading to the bridge which was slightly uphill or downhill whichever way you were travelling. I lived in and around the Romford area from 1957 until 1979 - I have never been back. I went to school first at St Edwards (the confessor) near the market square, we were taught by nuns and some were tyrants! Sister Aloysius, tall and willowy, gentle and kind visited each classroom with her huge rosary beads swinging amongst her voluminous black habit.
