More about this scene
In the mid-19th century Scotsman John Laurie came to Romford with plans to create Laurie Town, the country's first garden city. This revolutionary town planning project was abandoned when insufficient land could be acquired, but not before Laurie Square had been completed with Laurie Hall and these fine town mansions. The Mercury Gardens roundabout and Library stand here today.
