More about this scene
Black's Canal was at the western extreme of the Gidea Hall Estate. When the lake and the adjoining parkland was presented to the people of Romford in 1902 by Herbert Raphael it was named Raphael Park. Ever since, it has remained an oasis of calm. The island in the lake provides safe nesting and roosting for water birds.
