The Giants Table

A Memory of Romiley.

My name is Shaun Scully, we moved to 34 Gotherage Lane in 1964 when I was four, I used to play on the field near our house and the other kids knew about the Giants Table, I have forgotten all about this for 50 years! I think it was some sort of pylon-type structure over in the distance, what vivid imaginations we had.. I remember two friends, Graham and his little sister Maxine.(hope I remembered correctly). I went to Cherry Tree Infants, gutted to see it's been pulled down. Miss Holland was my class teacher I think. My mum used to take me to school on her bike as I had leg calipers on a lot, I still had a bike though! Happy days.. Left in '69 for Blackpool, been here ever since.

I grew up on Heathcote Gardens and also have fond memories of the 'giants table' which was some kind of old ruin in the farmers field near the canal behind the houses on Alamein Drive/Greenway. Tt used to look like a huge table and some of the braver kids used to climb on top of it( when we weren't fishing with jamjars in the canal! It's a wonder any of us survived to adulthood. I believe the farmer had now dismantled the giants table (probably to keep the kids away) and it is now just a heap of stones. I don't have a picture either but would also love one if anyone has one. I also went to Cherry Tree where Miss Holland was the head at the time. Elizabeth Robinson.
The giant's table was originally part on the Romiley Brick and Tile company. Was pulled down by the farmer who owns the land in about 1996 I believe.
I grew up on Greenway, used to play around the giants table and could see it clearly from our back garden. Lots of memories! Elizabeth, we may have played together when we were about 7 or 8?? My name is Christine Meaden and my sister, Debbie Meaden.
