Rothwell Childrens Home Leeds

A Memory of Rothwell.

I would like to hear from anybody that was in Rothwell Childrens home in 1947 - 1950 . I was Barry Bates and my brother and sister was in there too . Maureen and Terry . We have a lot of bad memories of this home. The assistant I remember with frightening memories is Miss Cripps. Some of the punishments were cruel.

I, too, lived in Rothwell Children's home. I have written my memoirs titled Nobody's Child, The true story of Growing up in a Yorkshire Children's Home, published by The History Press. I also experienced some cruelty at the hands of one member of staff. However, I also knew some good carers, and two wonderful elderly foster aunts, whose love sustained me through childhood. if you choose to read my book you will meet them.
My best wishes GJ
My thanks to all who have purchased my book Nobody's Child, The True Story of Growing up in a Yorkshire Children's home, published by The History Press. The home in question was Rothwell Cottage home, or as often referred to as Rothwell orphanage. Life here veered form extreme cruelty at the hands of the matron Miss Silverwood, to the kindness of some of the staff. The greatest comfort I had at the time, and the finest example of love and kindness, was shown to me through the contact I had with two maiden ladies, who acted as foster carers, and to whom I own much for their regular visits and comforting love and devotion. Now aged 76, I look back with gratitude to all who genuinely care for children in their darkest, lonely moments. Above all, I thank God for His love in bringing me through childhood, and a sound marriage and motherhood, with the knowledge that I am not a Nobody's Child. Everybody Is Somebody to God.
