More about this scene

South of the church, and facing the market place, is Jesus Hospital which was founded in 1591 for 26 poor men. It surrounds a quadrangle, the roof of the oldest part, dated 1593, is just visible to the left. This view shows the entrance range of 1840, with the finialled original 1590s gateway (behind a Pre-War Austin 10). They are still almshouses, although now converted to flats where the occupants live rent-free.

A Selection of Memories from Rothwell

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Rothwell

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I visited the Bluebell Inn and spent only a modest amount, however I left half a crown as a tip because of a very nice waitress. I left and had walked about two blocks, when the lady chased me down to thank me. I was quite surprised at this, but managed to remain calm and smiled graciously. Told her that if I came again to the Bluebell, I would surely look her up.
