More about this scene

Looking north-east, this photograph shows a strangely deserted High Street. On the right is the junction with Station Road. Under the Town Hall once stood an old 18th-century fire engine with wooden wheels, and also the old stocks. The fire engine is now restored and in private hands, but the stocks are in the Town Hall Museum.
