Royston, The Roundabout c.1965

More about this scene
The roundabout is situated at the crossing of the Icknield Way (the A505) and the A10. Up to the southern border of Royston, the A10 follows the route of the Roman Ermine Street, but close to the market Ermine Street becomes the Old North Road (which was the A14 and is now the A1198) taking travellers to Godmanchester and Huntingdon, whilst the A10 branches to Cambridge. With the demise of the coach trade along the B1368 via Barkway, the A10 shown here was the main road from London to Cambridge. Although our picture is remarkably free of traffic, during holiday times cars, buses and lorries backed up for two or three miles in each direction, and the congestion was only relieved by the construction of the Royston northern by-pass in the late 1960s.
