More about this scene
In the 1800s this area was one vast quarry. Stone from here was used to build the docks at Liverpool, Holker Hall in Cumbria and Tatton Hall in nearby Knutsford. It is even said that it was used for the building of the docks in New York, the stone originally travelling there as ballast in sailing ships. The stone was also particularly good for the sharpening of tools so that it was exported for this purpose to tool manufacturers all around the world.
