It is difficult looking at this view to imagine that it was ever once covered in woodland with small fisheries along the shore. It is a far cry, too, from the Runcorn that was described in 1834 as 'celebrated for its situation, being surrounded by a beautifully romantic and picturesque scenery' where, according to another visitor in 1795, 'lovers of botany may find a pleasing variety of plants'.
