Hans Embleton

A Memory of Sacriston.

My Mother was Maggie Dresser, Her mother Mabel ?? was an Embleton. My auntie was Jenny Waugh. ( Peter Waugh) corner shop - John St?

In the 1950's I went to Sacriston for holidays!! from South Yorkshire.

We all knew that we had an uncle Hans. (my mother's uncle that is.) I know very little about him other than that he was a churchgoer

I had a conversation with someone who I think was uncle Hans. At that time he was very deaf so he announced that since he could not hear us he would talk instead.

He was a prisoner of war and worked on a farm in Germany where they were badly treated by the farmer. He and another fellow prisoner were left alone and put in charge of preparing the cabbages for market. He laughed as he told the story.
"I won't go into details " he said "but we never ate any of that cabbage"

Is there a roll of honour anywhere in sacristan for ww1?

Mr derick Smith.
Hello again.

My family moved to wombwell from Sacriston in the 1930's.
Some of the Dresser family went to Stainfoth.
my grandfather was a dresser _ williams. He was illegitimate. When my aunt Jenny _married peter Waugh _ said that they had traced the name Dresser back to Holland, I pointed out that my grandfather was not really a Dresser she started to cry saying "he was a very nice man" I was 17 at the time so not as sensitive as I should have been.

A fred dresser half brother of my grandfather went to Canada and there is as you probably know a site where there are references to embletons. For a while no mention was made of my grandfather. He is on there now.
There are embletons in wombwell.
I left wombwell 40 years ago.
The Welsh girl williams is a mystery girl.

My father was John William dresser who was married to Doris turnbull. My father was born in sacriston and he was the brother of Jenny and lily (twins) . My parents moved to Stainforth when they married and moved back to sacriston 1959. I had 3 brothers Raymond, John and Peter . My name is Linda
Hello Linda. ,
Cousin Albert here.

I was the youngest child of your Aunt Maggie.

I was up Sacriston earlier this year. Went to cemetery. Went to John st . Saw Peter and Jennie's shop.

Noticed that someone had been looking at Raymonds grave.

I was with cousin Anne Halliday from Doncaster at a funeral wombwell.

I now live in warrington cheshire.

Albert.

Hello Albert
Lovely to hear from you. I remember my brothers talking about you. I remember all my Aunties & Uncles on Dad's side. I think Auntie Maggie was at my wedding 41 years ago at Sacriston. I don't know if you know but my 3 brothers Raymond, John & Peter have now passed away.

I lived in Newark for 28 years but now living in Seaham, County Durham.

I can remember the name Anne Halliday but not sure who she is.
Found this link very interesting. My name is Gary Dresser son of Raymond Dresser. I now know where my Dad got his middle name of Henry from, now passed onto my son.
To Derick I assume you mean John Dresser was born 1915 rather than 1925 as he was my grandad and died in 1977 aged 62/63.
Linda.
Ann Halliday is the daughter of Mabel Dresser.

Sister of my mother.
Albert
Hi, Gary you are right John Dresser was b 1915, my relative had put the wrong date on the family history chart. There was a report in newspapers Monday 16th july 1923 of a inquest on Henry Dresser aged 18 who drowned in the wear at chester lee street the inquest was at sacriston verdict Accidently drowned he lived at Victoria street was he the Henry b 1905 to Mabel and John william Dresser if so it was sad to find I have a full report of the incident if required. Derick
Hello Derek,

As you know from previous posts I share a family history with you.

When I was young my mother would always talk about Harry Dresser who drowned..
It was a tragedy that left its mark on her and indirectly -- us.

I used to break the ice at Wombwell Pit reservoir to swim.

Why ? 18 and daft!

I should have appreciated my mother's concerns and grief.

I know nothing of the incident , other than that he had eaten a heavy meal beforehand.

it would be great if you could send me that report - or a link.

Best way?

albert
Hi Albert I vaguely remember Ann now being the daughter of auntie Mabel. I have a wedding photo of my dad's six sisters. I also remember my dad telling me about his brother Henry who drowned in the river wear at Chester le street.
Hello Linda I remember that photo. That was at my brother Harry's wedding.

Any chance of a copy?

There was also a photo of them as children, before Jack was born.

Albert

HELLO My grandfather Harry Austin Winterbottom was chief engineer at sacristan colliery. My father William John had such happy memories of sacristan, the Hanky family too.
Helen
Great to see some of the comments on here. I believe the Hans you mentioned was my great great grandfather Hance Major Embleton. There was a couple other Embletons named the same but he was Mabel's brother and was a lay preacher so adds up to be him. He didn't go to WWI though, I believe the conversation you had may have been with his younger brother John. He was a PoW on a German farm. He used to live in the old bungalows in Sacriston and was very deaf in older age. I have a few pictures of Hance that have been passed down, it would be great to see any of his sister Mabel.
