Langdale House Salford

A Memory of Salford.

I lived in Langdale House, Salford. It was a block of masonettes, there were two other blocks on the same road, Patterdale and Ennerdale. We lived on the 3rd floor, overlooking a small play park and a row of tiny one bedroomed bungalows. I went to Mount Carmel school, which was just near Boots The Chemist which was on a corner on Regent Road. We used to walk from Oldfield Road right up to the top of Regent Road to the market at Cross Lane. Regent Road was a very busy shopping area in the early 60's there was every type of shop. I can remember my mum buying loose butter at the butchers on Regent Road. I can remember Landies Department Store, where they had a payment system which was piped all around the store, the assistant would take your money and it would then somehow go through the pipes to a cashiers office in a kind of shuttle and then your receipt and change would be delivered back to the assistant in the same manner. On a Sunday morning we would go to Mass and after that our dad would take us to the swimming baths just off Regent Road, that was a real treat. Then it was home for a hearty breakfast. A new shopping area was built just near the masonettes off Regent Road, The Piazza, there was a chemist, newsagents, greengrocers, hairdressers, it was a real revelation. Sadly all that history has disappeared for a Sainsbury's Supermarket!

Hi Ann , are you on Facebook.
I lived in Langdale house on the top floor. Went to mount Carmel primary then to sacred heart, the year I went to sacred heart school it became comprehensive, therefore the name changed to cathedral high school in 1977 and joined with adelphi grammar school . I have have very fond memories. The pub on the corner where sainsburys is now was called the two brewers, my mum worked there. I could go on, there was a doctor's and a dentist on the piazza.
