More about this scene

Overlooking the Market Square is the Black Bear Inn. The building dates from 1634. Today the ground floor has been painted white, so that the timberwork can only be seen on the floor above. The cobbles in the foreground can just be distinguished in the photograph – it is amazing that these still survive to add to the charm of the entire square.

My Grandmother, Mrs Sant, owned the hairdressers on the High Street. I used to take my 2p to Mrs Timmins Sweet Shop, which was just around the corner to buy my treats. It is such a delight to find this collection.
This was the family home of Harold and Dora Bagnall (my Grandparents) until the 1960s. The address used to be 21 Hawk Street and I was told as a child the incline next to Lower Chequer was for people to disembark from the stagecoach. I was also told although I cannot confirm this that the Lower Chequer was a stop off on the main road to London. I have very happy memories of my childhood ...see more
