More about this scene
This wide sweep of sand leads to Whitby in the distance. Sandsend is made up of two sections, each standing on the outflow of fast-flowing streams from high up on the Mulgrave estate - its castle has origins as coastal defence in the days of Charles II. Here we see West Row; East Row is on the right by the second stream. The spectacular coastal railway from Whitby to Loftus ran here between 1883 to 1958. Sandsend Station in the foreground is now a private house. The Sandsend Hotel (1899), centre, so dependent on rail links, has now been converted to apartments.
