Founded by the Saxons, Sandwich was once a Cinque Port at the mouth of the River Stour, but owing to silting it is now two miles from the sea. It reinvented itself as a cloth-weaving town, and is today a quaint market town with narrow streets. The Elizabethan town hall is now the museum. The town retains two of its town gates, Barbican Gate and Fisher Gate. Note the open-topped car on the right. The Town Hall originally went up in 1579, but its exteriror was completely rebuilt in 1910-12, giving it a mock-Tudor appearance.

Pioneering Couple From Sandwich
My great grandparents were married here 20 August 1859. Their names were Thomas William POOLE and Mary Ann TUCKWELL and they had a family of 11 - eight born in villages close to Sandwich and three born in Southland, New Zealand. Of this family one died at six months at Ash near Sandwich and three died in infancy in New Zealand, leaving seven to become seven branches of descendants numbering 2597 ...see more

Memory
I worked as Head Waiter here during Harold Wilsons time as P.M. Richard Marsh and other ministers used to escape here. We had the walker cup here. Our team led by Joe Carr and including a young Peter Oosterhouse. My girfriend was a receptionist from Thaxted Road, Saffron Waldon, called Delma Taylor. Many happy memories !!!

My Workplace In 1964
Worked here in the cocktail bar summer of 1964. Served Ian Fleming's wife.

Sandwich Rope Walk
I used to visit my great uncles & aunts in Sandwich as a child. They lived at The Butts in those days (long dead now though).  My grandmother would put me on the bus all alone at Upper Deal where we lived, (quite safe as the conductor used to look out for me), and my uncle would meet me at the Market Square in Sandwich.  (I can still recall the smell of the abattoir in the summer).  They had a dike at the ...see more

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
