More about this scene

These arches can be seen when approaching Sawley (or 'Sally') Abbey. Built in about 1890, one of them had to be removed years later because it obstructed the highway. They were placed at the entrance to a field, and were rather more impressive than a gate! They appear to be partly old stone, along with a mixture of stone and statuary from other eras. In the 1980s, the Historical Society made a good job of tidying up the approach to Sawley Abbey, and one enthusiast is in attendance on Sundays (not in winter) to explain the ruins.
